JSHS/WHS Community Schools

"In 2022, John Swett Unified School District began the process of assessing whether our schools could benefit from joining the nationwide movement to transform schools into "Wrap-Around" or "Full-Service" Community Schools.  These schools become hubs of community resources that support students, families, and staff in all necessary ways to create lasting changes that are responsive to community input and driven by community participation.  

With the help of Amy Mark, we began this transformation and applied to the California Community Schools Partnership Program (CCSPP) in 2024... and Rodeo Hills Elementary and Carquinez Middle Schools both met the requirements to receive the Implementation grant (CCSPP Cohort 3).  Julio "Mr. Somos" Magana was then hired in October 2024 to begin facilitating the Implementation of this Transformation.  He helped recruit and coordinate the leadership of a Community Schools Action Team (CSAT) - composed of Teachers, Classified Employees, Parent Leaders, Elected Student Representatives from all schools, an Admin Rep, and District Leadership, and Community Partners.  Together, they are working to facilitate the implementation of Community School efforts at all John Swett Unified Schools.  2024-2025 was year 1 of 5.

In 2025 we once again applied, this time for Cohort 4, and Willow High School was awarded the CCSPP grant!  Since Willow and John Swett share a campus and all student services, we have been organizing our strategy to ensure that every student at both JSHS and WHS benefits from our Community Schools efforts.  Year 2025-2026 was year 1 of 5, implementing the California Community Schools Partnership Program strategy at JSHS/WHS.  Mr. Somos is facilitating work at all four JSUSD schools!
